~~-We are working hard to reduce the level of technical complexity involved in installing SlimCar, but essentially you need to create a few symlinks on your MasterLibrary and then you configure SlimCar using the Web Interface

If you can satisfy all of the above requirements, proceed to HowToInstall.

The target audience for SlimCar are people with some Linux/UNIX experience (not necessarily much) and some familiarity with computer hardware. If you're a complete newbie, SlimCar is probably not for you - but perhaps you have a friend who can help you install it.

  • A music library.
SlimServer supports a huge variety of formats, including MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG and WMA.
  • A spare IDE hard drive that can accomodate your library
Note that you don't necessarily need to have SlimCar sync your entire library but we highly recommend that you do so.
A 3.5" (standard size) drive is fine, but 2.5" drives consume less power, are quieter and are generally more shock-resistant. They're more expensive too, unfortunately.
  • Basic Linux/UNIX experience.
You will need to format SlimCar's hard drive using Linux. You can either do this with your MasterLibrary or a Linux LiveCD.
    See HowToFormatDrive for more information
  • A PC suitable for use in the car.
Requirements here are fairly minimal - see HardwareRequirements.
At the bare minimum, you need an x86-powered system that works under Linux, has a network interface (100mbit+ Ethernet recommended) and an IDE hard drive interface.
Certain hardware setups will require a custom kernel. Don't be daunted, it isn't hard! See HowToKernel.
(Optional) A keyboard and monitor. You can hook these up to your SlimCar system and login to it to explore the system and learn more about how it works.

Various NAS devices also qualify, as long as you can also run Rsync on it.
