SlimCar Installation Requirements
The target audience for
SlimCar are people with some Linux/UNIX experience (not necessarily much) and some familiarity with computer hardware. If you're a complete newbie when it comes to these things,
SlimCar is probably not for you - but perhaps you have a friend who can help you install it.
- An existing Linux/UNIX system running SqueezeCenter.
- This generally implies that you already have at least one SqueezeBox and a music library.
- Various NAS devices also qualify, as long as you can also run Rsync on it.
- Windows systems cannot be used, for various reasons. See WhyNotWindows for more information.
- Basic Linux/UNIX experience.
- We are working hard to reduce the level of technical complexity involved in installing SlimCar, but essentially you need to create a few symlinks on your MasterLibrary and then you configure SlimCar using the Web Interface
- See HowToInstall for more information.
- A spare IDE hard drive that can accomodate your library and SlimCar
- Note that you don't necessarily need to have SlimCar sync your entire library but we highly recommend that you do so.
- A 3.5" (standard size) drive is fine, but 2.5" drives consume less power, are quieter and are generally more shock-resistant. They're more expensive too, unfortunately.
- A PC suitable for use in the car.
- The requirements for the PC itself are fairly minimal - see HardwareRequirements.
- Power supply designed for in-car use. There are countless websites dealing with the kind of thing, check out www.linitx.com∞, www.mini-itx.com∞ and www.mp3car.com∞.
- Certain hardware setups will require a custom kernel. Don't be daunted, it isn't hard! See HowToKernel.
- (Optional) A keyboard and monitor. You can hook these up to your SlimCar system and login to explore the system and learn more about how it works.
If you can satisfy all of the above requirements, proceed to
HowToInstall.
