Hardware Requirements
There are two parts to this page - the hardware requirements for your
SlimCar system, and those for your
MasterLibrary.
SlimCar Requirements
SlimCar is intended to run on lightweight, low-power hardware, with minimal features required. The requirements are:
- 128 megabytes (minimum) RAM
- 300MHz+ 32-bit i386-compatible processor (Intel∞ Pentium/Celeron, AMD∞ Athlon/Duron, VIA∞ C3 etc)
- Sufficient hard drive space to store your entire music collection, plus room for future growth. This can range from 2-200 gigabytes and beyond. You need at least 200MB of free space to allocate to SlimCar itself.
- Network interface. 100mbit+ recommend. The current kernel includes nForce 2, Realtek 8139 and various other drivers. More can be added on request. Wireless support will not be added, we recommend using an external bridge/access point if you wish to connect to your SlimCar system wirelessly.
- Suitable power supply. It's beyond the scope of this Wiki to discuss car PSU options, but there are a huge variety available depending on your power requirements and desired features.
- A SqueezeBox! Not strictly required, but a SqueezeBox is by far and away the best "frontend" for SlimCar. We recommend a v2 or v3 unit - v2 devices aren't as pretty but are better-shaped to fit in a standard DIN slot. You can also use SoftSqueeze (you'll need a laptop though!) or another media playing device that can handle streaming media. There is nothing to stop you using multiple frontends with your SlimCar system.
- A note about what isn't needed... you don't require a keyboard, mouse or display when you have finished with the Installer. The only control you need access to is the Power button, and you could rig something up with a relay or similar to control that.
MasterLibrary Requirements
Your
MasterLibrary system is the one you run
SqueezeCenter on at home. We anticipate that most people interested in
SlimCar will already have such a system in place. Hardware requirements can be found on
www.slimdevices.com∞, but we recommend the following:
- At least a 1GHz CPU. Rescans are very processor-intensive, and we recommend a fast machine to reduce the time required.
- Ample hard drive space. As with SlimCar, you need room to store your entire collection. Remember to plan ahead - if you expect to add a lot more music, get a bigger drive.
- Some kind of backup strategy. No one wants to lose all of their music...
- Don't forget to look at the SoftwareRequirements.
- The MasterLibrary must be UNIX/Linux-based. See WhyNotWindows for more information.
